The Maxima & Minima of a function, also known as extrema, are the largest and smallest value of the function, either within a given range (the local or relative extrema), or on the entire domain (the global or absolute extrema).

Conditions for f(x, y) to be Maximum and Minimum

  • A function f(x, y) is said to be maximum at (a, b) if f(a, b) > f(a+h, y+k) for small values of h and k, positive or negative

  • A function f(x, y) is said to be minimum at (a, b) if f(a, b) < f(a+h, y+k) for small values of h and k, positive or negative

This chapter is further divided into the following classes: 

  • Class A: Finding a point of Maxima and Minima and hence stationary values using partial derivatives

  • Class B: Application of Lagrange’s theorem to maximize/minimize given function under the single constraint
